France's Gitmo...?

-
Wow. Just when we thought only American correctional institutions were subject to derision; we get word that France is not being hospitable enough to criminals.

[[ FRANCE'S prisons are the worst in Europe and their cells are akin to dungeons in the Middle Ages, according to a watchdog's report yesterday.

Hygiene is "deplorable", with inmates crowded into filthy, rat-infested cells, leading to an explosion in the number of prisoners with infectious diseases, the International Observatory of Prisons (IOP) said.

It described conditions as "catastrophic" and condemned the French government for failing to improve matters. "The situation is totally unworthy of our level of civilisation. Conditions of detention are close to those of the Middle Ages," the Paris-based IOP said.
]]

France Running Dungeons?

By the way, none of those "deplorable" circumstances have been reported at Gitmo OR at Abu-Ghraib. No matter how well we treat those terrorist scum, the world will find ways to indict us for it... all the while running their own hellish prison systems.

Anyway, the crusading group who is reporting the poor conditions knows where the blame lies: with France's new tough-on-crime policies:

[[ It blamed the government's tougher sentencing polices for aggravating chronically bad prison conditions without solving the problem of delinquency. ]]

I get it... if you don't sentence them to prison in the first place, they won't have to live in such conditions. Kind of like: if you don't go to war, then people won't die.

Sounds reasonable... perfect liberal logic.

Sadly, such oversights are all too common... for instance, I heard that Abu-Ghraib lacks a cosmetic dentistry room... you know, where you go to have your teeth filed down until you talk...
