Religion Of "Honor" Crimes

-
It is just a bit... oh, I don't know... ironic, maybe? Cutting the throat of your 16 year old daughter is "honorable" because her being seen with a non-muslim is not "honorable."

Is ironic the wrong word there? I'm pretty sure it is the wrong word...

[[ Rukhsana Naz was 19 when her mother pinned her to the floor of their family house and her brother strangled her with a length of plastic cable.

Sahjda Bibi, 21, was preparing to celebrate her wedding when her cousin stabbed her 22 times with a kitchen knife. The father of 16-year-old Heshu Yones slit her throat because he disapproved of her Western habits and non-Muslim boyfriend.

All were victims of "honor killings," murdered by relatives who believed they had brought shame on their families through their behavior or choice of boyfriend, husband or lover.
]]

Did we all get that? Her MOTHER pinned her down so that her BROTHER could kill her...

Holy Lord... how does anyone ever come to this. How can this religion be looked at in any way as being "normal" and/or "peaceful"????

..Now this is not an attempt to decimate one's religion..[I do not have issues with Islam or any other religious preferences]..But..by doing some research here I found some interesting controversy between Islam..Christianity..and maybe even Judaism..And for the life of me..I don't get it..All claim to worship the same God..so why all the hate..??..
..As is the case with this one example I find interesting..[I worship the God of the Ancient Hebrews..and I am not Jewish]..

"The fifth pillar requires that Muslims who have the physical and financial ability should perform the pilgrimage, or hajj, to Mecca at least once in a lifetime. The ritual of pilgrimage was practiced by Arabs before the rise of Islam and continues from the early days of Islam. The hajj is distinct from other pilgrimages. It must take place during the 12th lunar month of the year, known as Dhu al-Hijja, and it involves a set and detailed sequence of rituals that are practiced over the span of several days. All of the pilgrimage rituals take place in the city of Mecca and its surroundings, and the primary focus of these rituals is a cubical structure called the Kaaba. According to Islamic tradition, the Kaaba, also referred to as the House of God, was built at God's command by the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham of the Hebrew and Christian Bibles) and his son Ismail (see Ishmael).

The final ritual is the slaughter of an animal (sheep, goat, cow, or camel). This is a symbolic reenactment of God's command to Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail, which Ibrahim and Ismail duly accepted and were about to execute when God allowed Ibrahim to slaughter a ram in place of his son.

Isaac (Hebrew, “laughter”), biblical patriarch, the son of Abraham, half brother of Ishmael, and father of Jacob and Esau. The birth of Isaac was promised (see Genesis 17:19, 21) to Abraham and his wife Sarah, after a long and childless marriage, as a sign that the blessings originally bestowed by God upon Abraham would be continued in Isaac, heir of the Covenant. The events of Isaac's life are recounted in Genesis 21-28.

The dominant story in the narrative, and one of the most widely known stories in the Bible, is that of the projected sacrifice of Isaac (see Genesis 22). According to this account, God tested Abraham's faith by asking him to sacrifice his beloved son. At the last moment, after God was convinced of the perfect obedience of both father and son, he accepted a ram as a substitute for the youth.

..And to add more to the story..

"Ishmael (Hebrew, “may God hear”), in the Old Testament, the elder son of the Hebrew patriarch Abraham, and in Islamic tradition, an ancestor of the Arab peoples. His story (see Genesis 16, 21, 25) is interwoven with that of Isaac. Ishmael's mother was Hagar, Egyptian handmaid to Abraham's wife, Sarah, who was barren. In answer to her prayers, Sarah conceived and was delivered of a son, Isaac. Having thus satisfied Abraham, Sarah demanded that Hagar and Ishmael be driven away. Hagar and her son fled to the south. Ishmael settled in the wilderness, married an Egyptian woman, and became the progenitor of 12 tribes of desert nomads. The region occupied by these Ishmaelites included most of central and northern Arabia. Muslims regard themselves as the descendents of Ishmael and view Hagar as the true wife of Abraham, and Ishmael (or Ismail) his favored son. In this version, Ismail, not Isaac, was offered for sacrifice by Abraham.

..God [according to The Holy Scriptures] speaks to Hager..

(Genesis 16:10) . . .: "I shall greatly multiply your seed, so that it will not be numbered for multitude."
(Genesis 16:11) . . .: "Here you are pregnant, and you shall give birth to a son and must call his name Ish´ma·el; . . .

(Genesis 16:11-12) . . .. 12 As for him, he will become a zebra of a man. His hand will be against everyone, and the hand of everyone will be against him; and before the face of all his brothers he will tabernacle."

..Could it possibly be just that simple..jealousy..envy..animosity..If one were looking for answers to help resolve these issues..where would one look..

Hmmm ... It is certainly clear that there are a significant number of people out there who call themselves Moslems who behave in ways that can only be described as barbaric. OTOH, there are on the order of a billion Moslems in the world. Even a small fraction of one percent of a billion is a pretty big number. Outside of a few Moslems I have known personally, most of what I know about Islam and its followers comes from the media. I suspect that I am a typical Westerner in this. Now consider how the media has covered the Iraq situation, and think about how Islam might look, as seen through that lens. Or just ask yourself what you might think of Christians and Christianity, if all you had to go on was the Branch Davidians and the Irish Republican Army, and didn't have the Pope to contrast them with. Then toss in religion being a major path to secular power, and consider the sort of people who will therefore frequently be found in the religious hierarchy. None of this should in any way be taken to excuse shit like honour killings, but I'm just not sure, under the circumstances, whether it's fair to write off the whole religion ...
