Ding Dong, ONE Tyrant's Gone

I am back and forth on the death penalty because of my strong Catholic upbringing versus my right-wing-edness. With that being said, however, it does appear that sometimes punishment by death is the only logical choice. Saddam's execution is much more of a symbol and a landmark than a mere hanging. He's really gone and a lot of people never thought he would be...

From National Review, Andy McCarthy wrote a nice piece on this...

Saddam's Death [Andy McCarthy]
I had to turn off the TV-news.
This is a solemn, important moment. It's not a joyous one. An evil man deserved to die. His elimination was necessary — not close to sufficient, but necessary — for achieving, over time, a semblance civilized stability in Iraq. The celebration in the streets, though, the dancing and firing guns in the air, does not augur well for that achievement.
This wasn't victory. It didn't end suffering. It was, in the heat of a war that has actually gotten more vicious and more uncertain since Saddam's capture three years ago, the carrying out of an essential but unpleasant duty. It marginally enhances Iraq's propects, and ours. But Saddam's death (as opposed to his deposing) has no impact whatsoever on the deep dysfunction and hatred that is rending what passes for Iraqi society. The unbridled display of dancing and shooting says more about that than the death of one man — monstrous though he was — who has been imprisoned for three years.
Saddam's death is a marker worth observing. It is not something to go up in a balloon over.

It is very unpleasant to be pleased when any human being is killed. It is a mark of our civility, humanity, and goodness that we can even discuss it this way.

In much of the world (especially the lands of the "religion of peace"), executions are just a ho-hum part of life.

The value of a human life is definitely not sacred to those people, but even Saddam's life was given to him by Almighty God... and that is worth remembering.

Having said all that, I will add that maybe some good will come of this... maybe now some of the fanatics will back off just a bit. Any progress is good progress in that barbaric part of the world.

By the way, thanks for this post!

I'm not generally in favour of the death penalty, because it's too easy to kill the wrong person, and dead is forever. But sometimes, rarely, there is no possible doubt, and Saddam was such a case. Alpha mike foxtrot.

I don't think Saddam should have been given a trial.
