Survival Against All Odds

-
Unfortunately, the current fad of anti-semitism, while disgusting beyond belief, is nothing new. Israel has had to fight for its life throughout virtually all of its history... and is doing so now.

Here is Charles Krauthammer with an excellent piece on the reasons for Israel's "aggression."

[[ Next June will mark the 40th anniversary of the Six-Day War. For four decades we have been told that the cause of the anger, violence and terror against Israel is its occupation of the territories seized in that war. End the occupation and the "cycle of violence" ceases.

The problem with this claim was that before Israel came into possession of the West Bank and Gaza in the Six-Day War, every Arab state had rejected Israel's right to exist and declared Israel's pre-1967 borders -- now deemed sacred -- to be nothing more than the armistice lines suspending, and not ending, the 1948-49 war to exterminate Israel.

But you don't have to be a historian to understand the intention of Israel's enemies. You only have to read today's newspapers.
]]

The only real issue that keeps the instability and violence going is Israel's right to exist. That's it.

Please read the whole column- it's a good one.

Why They Fight

Sadly, Charles is absolutly correct. Groups like the PLO, Hamas, and Hezballah will never cease their hostility towards Israel until one of them parishes from this earth.
Israel has shown GREAT restraint in dealing with these threats to it's existance. This war has been a long time coming, and the world will see once again, the resolve of the Israeli people; they may not stop until these orginizations are disposed of, and the nations that support them (Syria, Iran) give in and sue for peace. I don't believe this conflict will be confined to Israel and Lebenon. Also, with our troops in Iraq, we may end up getting sucked into it: lock, stalk, and barrel. I hope and prey I'm wrong, but I can't shake the feeling there may be something to the Book of Revelations coming into play...and I'm not a religious person.

The thing that always astonishes me about the Islamists is that they think they can get away with a battle plan that absolutely relies upon the self-restraint of their enemies. Sooner or later, some western nation (counting Israel as one such) is going to lose patience and decide to play the game by the same rules as the Islamists are using, and when that happens, a really horrifying number of moslems (read: most of them) are going to die. Damned near nobody understands just how much destructive power is available to any western nation that decides to take the gloves all the way off ...

So true, Steve... so damn true. Sadly, if any country is ever pushed to that level, the rest of the "civilized" world will condemn it. The level of denial about the true nature of the islamofascists is astounding.

Nah... that wouldn't be a smart bet at all.
