Ding Dong, ONE Tyrant's Gone

I am back and forth on the death penalty because of my strong Catholic upbringing versus my right-wing-edness. With that being said, however, it does appear that sometimes punishment by death is the only logical choice. Saddam's execution is much more of a symbol and a landmark than a mere hanging. He's really gone and a lot of people never thought he would be...

From National Review, Andy McCarthy wrote a nice piece on this...

Saddam's Death [Andy McCarthy]
I had to turn off the TV-news.
This is a solemn, important moment. It's not a joyous one. An evil man deserved to die. His elimination was necessary — not close to sufficient, but necessary — for achieving, over time, a semblance civilized stability in Iraq. The celebration in the streets, though, the dancing and firing guns in the air, does not augur well for that achievement.
This wasn't victory. It didn't end suffering. It was, in the heat of a war that has actually gotten more vicious and more uncertain since Saddam's capture three years ago, the carrying out of an essential but unpleasant duty. It marginally enhances Iraq's propects, and ours. But Saddam's death (as opposed to his deposing) has no impact whatsoever on the deep dysfunction and hatred that is rending what passes for Iraqi society. The unbridled display of dancing and shooting says more about that than the death of one man — monstrous though he was — who has been imprisoned for three years.
Saddam's death is a marker worth observing. It is not something to go up in a balloon over.

A Damn Good Rant

Well, I couldn't say this any better. This rant from a FoxNews columnist tells it just like it is. We are rewarding girls for behaving like trashy, super-skanks. No, we're idolizing them, turing them into super-stars and buying all their freakin' crap!

GRRR! Hot Women in Hot Water All Too Common
Wednesday, December 27, 2006
By Mike Straka

"What can you say about a ... girl who died? That she was beautiful and brilliant. That she loved Mozart and Bach. The Beatles, and me?"
That is the opening line in "Love Story," the 1970 tearjerker that starred Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw. And while none of the young hotties involved in the recent beauty pageant "scandals" is dead — thankfully — if a movie were to be made out of the lives of Miss Nevada Katie Rees and Miss USA Tara Conner, perhaps the opening lines would be:
"What can you say about a girl who's famous? That she thinks Beethoven is a St. Bernard, she loved Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and living in the limelight?"
Sadly, these days, "living in the limelight" means doing something so outrageous as to embarrass oneself, and to shame one's family. Only then do we truly grant fame and fortune.
If you don't believe it, look at Hilton, Spears and Lohan. All millionaires. All famous. All troubled. All looked up to by millions of girls. All in all, a sad state of affairs.
Ironically, the root of our culture war is the consumer. And that means you.
And while Time magazine proclaims "You" to be the Person of the Year, what with YouTube and MySpace and all of the user-generated content that has become all the rage, the result is not so glorious as Time will have you believe.
Because amid all the content choices "you" are faced with today, the only way for anyone to stand out is to do something either completely unethical, like "Lonelygirl15" on MySpace — who, unbeknownst to her thousands of "friends" until recently, is really just an actress doing a scripted show — or pull a Paris Hilton and have a sex tape released on the Internet. Or pull a Britney Spears and prove to a plethora of photographers that you didn't bother to put on your panties.
We have gone so far in reverse as a society that the only way the fashion industry can make headlines these days is not by creating bold new designs, but by banning skinny models from runways in favor of healthier looking women.
We are that bass-ackwards and that blinded by pop culture that we need a mandate from Anna Wintour before we are smart enough not to stick our own fingers down our throats after a meal.
That is scary.
Miss USA Tara Conner's life was probably saved by Donald Trump, which is ironic considering it was his pageant and organization that put her in the position to run wild and crazy through Manhattan's nightlife and glam parties where drugs, alcohol and sex are apparently rampant.
Conner was living a scene right out of "Star 80," and going to rehab will hopefully prolong her life by screwing her head on straight — hopefully.
If only the millions of girls who have witnessed this nutty episode would focus on the rehab part, and the danger of what too much partying can mean. Most likely they stopped paying attention after the part about partying.
Miss Rees is a somewhat different story.
As Miss Nevada, she was scheduled to compete in the Miss USA contest this spring, but has since been stripped of her crown by Trump's organization after racy pictures surfaced on the Internet. In them, she appears to be partying her little head (not to mention her clothes) off, and putting on a lesbian sex show for a bunch of gawking geeks who look like they would have no idea what to do with Miss Nevada — or any other woman, for that matter.
And that's probably why she felt safe enough to behave in the way that she did in public.
I mean, what harm could it bring her to have a little fun and emulate what she may have seen on MTV on an episode of "Girl on Girl Dismissed" — where on one afternoon a few years ago, I saw two teenage beauties passionately making out in a swimming pool — or on any "Girls Gone Wild" infomercial that so many cable networks rely on for late night revenue?
As for MTV, which has since canceled it's "Dismissed" series, I was appalled that the network catering to the world's youth would air such a thing — to say nothing of the Madonna-Spears French kiss. As for "Girls Gone Wild," I think it's time for networks to drop those infomercials and let the liquor industry spend some of its billions of dollars on late-night advertising, because at this point the dangers of alcohol use are well known to mankind.
The dangers of showing young hot girls in compromising positions, censored or not, is only now beginning to rear its ugly head (not to mention the fact that liquor giant Diageo has a lot more money than Joe Francis, the producer of the "GGW" series).
On the one hand, we're saying it's OK to party and have fun and for the networks and sly entrepreneurs to profit from it — as long as nobody gets hurt. On the other, when pictures of said partying surface, people in them like beauty queens end up losing their crowns and disgracing themselves.
It's diabolical.

But John Edwards is even more of a goober than John Kerry!!

John Edwards Announces '08 Presidential Campaign

Former North Carolina senator and vice presidential candidate John Edwards on Thursday announced his bid for the presidency in the 2008 election, calling on Americans who want a change in direction to support his candidacy.
"If we want to change this country, if we want to move America the way it needs to move, we're going to have to do it," Edwards told reporters gathered in a Hurricane Katrina victim's backyard in New Orleans' 9th Ward, where he staged the kickoff for his campaign.
"We want people in this campaign to actually take action now, not later, not after the next election," Edwards said. "Instead of staying home and complaining, we're asking Americans to help. .... Most of the good that has been done in New Orleans has been done by faith-based groups, charitable groups and volunteers."
Clad in blue jeans and an open-necked shirt with his sleeves rolled up, Edwards said his would be a grassroots campaign that would be led by the needs of the American people while also shining a light on international issues. He said Americans needs to re-establish U.S. prominence in the international arena.

Off We Go...

-
Well, we're taking off in the A.M. - Over the river and through the snowy woods and all that.

With luck, my liberal pounding eldest daughter and/or TJ will provide some posts while I'm away. I will have sparse and intermittent web access for the next two weeks.

The very best of the holidays to all of you... thanks for the time you have spent reading my humble site this year.

I will return soon...

Yes. The Answer Is Yes

-
Here is the most famous Christmas letter to the editor in history. It is worth reading over and over with each passing year.

-----------------------------

Editorial Page, The New York Sun, 1897:

We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun:

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O'Hanlon

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the scepticism of a sceptical age. They do not believe except what they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus? Thank God he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!

A Different Kind Of Poem

-
A Different Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed 'round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep;
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,
Then the the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."

"It's my duty to stand at the front of the lines,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.

My Gramps died at 'Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... An American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..

Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."
"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."

"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled,
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

Silent Night...

-
Getting ready to hit the rack... the girls are all tucked in and Santa will be here soon.

I talked to my Mom earlier... my son is there with her in Colorado. My eldest daughter is in Southern California-- the first time she hasn't been with us for Christmas.

I miss them. Very much. Christmas is supposed to be shared with your family... but part of mine is very far away.

The good news is that we will all be together next week... and that is definitely something. I will be very happy for that when it happens.

For tonight, though, I am going to mourn just a bit. I'm going to mourn the loss of the past, and I'm going to mourn the absence of two of my children. Just a bit, though... just a bit.

Maybe I'll also...

...celebrate all the memories I have from past years. I think I'll remember how incredibly nice it was for all those years to have us all together. I think I'll laugh when I recall the silly Christmas shows the kids put on for us (and still do). I think I'll smile when I picture the looks of expectation... followed by the looks of happiness when the wrapping paper came off. I know I'll feel warm when I remember the midnight masses and Christmas morning services at St. Jude's with Father Peter. I will also never forget all the phone calls back home to Colorado to talk to Grandma's and Grandpa's on Christmas... passing the phone around and listening as the litany of presents was relayed. The dinners will always be fresh in my mind, too. So much laughter and light to look back on.

You know...

Mourning is all well and good, but I think the scales are tipping toward celebration and happy memories.

I am blessed and I choose to focus on that.

We miss you, Arthur and Jessica... aaa-lot. But you are with us tonight in our hearts-- just as you will always be. No distance can take that away.

Merry Christmas and may God Bless us all.

Okay, who knows what the penalty is for an infidel being in the "holy" place of Medina during the muslim "holy" time?

Give up?

Here you go:

[[ A Keralite (Indian), who was reportedly facing a death sentence in Saudi Arabia, has been set free due to timely intervention of Indian authorities.

Jojo Joseph of Edathua in the district was on Monday ordered to be beheaded for entering the holy place of Medina despite a bar on non-Muslims.

According to Jojo's family members in Edathua, the Saudi authorities later took a lenient view of the case after they were convinced that he did not deliberately commit the mistake.

Jojo, employed in an electronic shop in Jeddah, ran into trouble while rushing in a cab to a hospital where his wife had given birth to a child. The taxi driver took a wrong route and strayed into the prohibited area, his family members said.

The Indian was then spotted by religious volunteers, who handed him to police.

Jojo's brother-in-law sought former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's help in the matter. Chandy contacted the Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi and Minister of state for External Affairs E Ahmed.

The two ministers acted swiftly and secured the release of Jojo through the intervention of Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia.

Indian Man Barely Escapes Beheading For Being An Infidel

Oh, you knew the answer... heck, with those wacky muslims, the penalty is ALWAYS death!

And they're SO tolerant, aren't they? They were going to behead JoJo because he wasn't muslim and he was in a special muslim place...

Gotta love 'em!

Okay, Everyone Who Is Surprised By This...

-
...raise your hand.

So, the terrorists are taking their well-deserved credit for the liberal wins in November.

[[ Al Qaeda has sent a message to leaders of the Democratic party that credit for the defeat of congressional Republicans belongs to the terrorists.

In a portion of the tape from al Qaeda No. 2 man, Ayman al Zawahri, made available only today, Zawahri says he has two messages for American Democrats.

"The first is that you aren't the ones who won the midterm elections, nor are the Republicans the ones who lost. Rather, the Mujahideen -- the Muslim Ummah's vanguard in Afghanistan and Iraq -- are the ones who won, and the American forces and their Crusader allies are the ones who lost," Zawahri said, according to a full transcript obtained by ABC News.
]]

Yeah, that's right. Just like Spain and Italy, the United States now has a terrorist friendly government... and the bad guys want to make sure the dumocrats know that they would not have been able to win without terrorist backing.

Furthermore, al qaeda is letting the dumocrats know that they have to talk to the terrorists (already being done), betray Israel (already being done), and surrender in Iraq very soon (working on it)... or else.

[[ Zawahri calls on the Democrats to negotiate with him and Osama bin Laden, not others in the Islamic world who Zawahri says cannot help.

"And if you don't refrain from the foolish American policy of backing Israel, occupying the lands of Islam and stealing the treasures of the Muslims, then await the same fate," he said.

This Is Why We're Losing

-
Illegal immigration. What does that mean to you? To most of us, it means people who have come into our country ILLEGALLY. Get that? Without permission... without using the processes that are in place. ILLEGAL. Against the law.

So... when our government finally starts to do something about the massive problem, then we see the true face of our domestic enemy. Some come out and argue that the government has no legal right to arrest ILLEGAL immigrants... and now, some say that arresting ILLEGAL immigrants is just like what the nazis did to the Jews.

Yep... you heard that one right. Nazis. Enforcing our immigration laws equals nazi tactics. Don't believe me?

[[ U.S. Hispanic groups and activists on Thursday called for a moratorium on workplace raids to round up illegal immigrants, saying they were reminiscent of Nazi crackdowns on Jews in the 1930s. ]]

Want more? Okay, here's some wisdom from a dumocrat operative:

[[ "This unfortunately reminds me of when Hitler began rounding up the Jews for no reason and locking them up," democrat Party activist Carla Vela said. "Now they're coming for the Latinos, who will they come for next?" ]]

Here's the whole story, if you have the stomach for it. Idiots.

If I were Jewish, I would be SO offended by this crap.

Wait... I'm not Jewish, but I'm still offended by this crap! These morons are comparing the soft-glove treatment we give to ILLEGAL immigrants to the nazi torture and death camps that murdered six million Jews??

Yes. Yes, they are. This is what we are up against. This is the real enemy...

LtCol North does what the old media does not... he goes to the streets of the battlefield and tells the warriors' stories.

Here is a good one:

[[ RAMADI, Iraq.

"We're here to win." That's how a U.S. Marine corporal put it when I asked him what he was doing in Iraq. He spoke looking squarely into our TV camera -- a more intimidating experience for him than the rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) fire he had just faced on the streets of this beleaguered city. When I pressed this 20-year-old from America's heartland to tell me what "winning" meant to him, he was straightforward: "That's when these people don't need me to guard this street so their kids can go to school -- when they can do it themselves."

The young corporal and I stood outside a small elementary school in this shattered capital of Iraq's largest province. Al Qaeda terrorists had told local authorities -- on pain of death -- not to allow this female academic institution to unshutter its doors. Apparently, little girls learning math and science significantly threaten radical Islamic jihadists.

[[ Weather Bulletin - North Dakota

This text is from a county emergency manager out in the western part of North Dakota state after a recent snowstorm.

WEATHER BULLETIN

Up here, in the Northern Plains, we just recovered from an historic event--- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" --- with a blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to tens of thousands.

FYI:

George Bush did not come.

FEMA did nothing.

No one howled for the government.

No one blamed the government.

No one even uttered an expletive on TV.

Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit.

Our Mayor did not blame Bush or anyone else.

Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else, either.

CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC did not visit - or report on this category 5 snowstorm.

Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.

No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House.

No one looted.

Nobody - I mean Nobody - demanded the government do something.

Nobody expected the government to do anything, either.

No Larry King, No Bill O'Rielly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera.

No Shaun Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found.

Nope, we just melted the snow for water.

Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars.

The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny.

Local restaurants made food and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snowbound families.

Families took in the stranded people - total strangers.

We fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns.

We put on extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die".

We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for "sittin' at home" checks.

Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.

In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 48 degrees North Latitude, 90% of the world's social problems evaporate.

It does seem that way, at least to me.

I hope this gets passed on.

Maybe SOME people will get the message. The world does not owe you a living.
]]

Amen to that.

[[ Al Qaeda might be on the run in Afghanistan, but Osama bin Laden's agents are in the driver's seat at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Officers tell of daily attacks by al Qaeda inmates against U.S. military personnel, who are ordered not to respond.

...

Officials said al Qaeda inmates have attacked American guards on a daily basis. During the 12-month period that ended in August 2006, authorities reported 3,232 incidents of detainee misconduct. They included 432 assaults with bodily fluids, 227 physical assaults and 99 efforts to incite a disturbance or riot.

Lorie Byrd discusses how Bush-bashing is hotter than ever with liberals and the media (I know, that was redundant). Honestly, I have seen no increase in it... it has not let up for years now, and sounds just like background noise to me.

Anyway:

[[ Since Democrats won control of both the House and Senate in November’s elections, “Bush-bashing” has reached unprecedented levels. What has been interesting to watch is the way Bush’s critics are treated by most in the media. The Religion Of "Honor" Strikes Again

-
The next time you hear someone talking about what a peaceful and dignified and honorable religion islam really is... the next time you hear that crap, think of this.

This is the real face of that cult.

[[ A Jordanian man shot dead his daughter and her fiancé on rumors that the couple had engaged in premarital sex, the Jordan Times reported Monday, quoting police.

The suspect has confessed to the authorities "that he shot the couple after his wife informed him she had heard from neighbors that her daughter and her boyfriend had been having sexual relations," the police officer said.

The father said that he was "infuriated" by the rumors and apparently decided to kill the couple to cleanse his family's honor, the official said.

The suspect was arrested and charged with murder Saturday, two days after the killing of his 21-year-old daughter and her 23-year-old fiancé.

An autopsy revealed that the young woman was a virgin, the report added.

Since January, more than 12 women have been killed in similar "honor crimes" in the conservative Muslim kingdom.

Here's a nice column by Robert Tracinski about the Iraq Surrender Group (ISG) and their blathering "solutions" to the war.

[[ In my student days back at the University of Chicago, there was a campus comedy troupe modeled on Second City, their more well-known uptown uncle. The U of C group was pretty funny, if in a somewhat bookish way. (Who else does a comedy routine based on "Oedipus Rex"?) One of their funniest bits was a recurring skit about a superhero named Captain Obvious. In each scene, a character would face a mundane problem, only to be "saved" by the banal and utterly unhelpful advice offered by Captain Obvious. "I've locked my keys in my car. What am I going to do?" "Well then," replies Captain Obvious, "all you have to do is open the door to your car, and then you can get your keys." Each scene ended the same way, with Captain Obvious proclaiming, "No, don't thank me. It's all in a day's work for Captain Obvious.

I've been reminded of this skit many times since, because I frequently hear the same kind of advice being given in Washington. Take, for example, the recommendations offered, to much fanfare, by the Iraq Study Group.

The problem in Iraq is that we can't withdraw U.S. troops because the Iraqi military is not adequately trained to maintain security on its own? Well then, the ISG tells us, all we need to do is to train the Iraqi military so that they can maintain security on their own, and then we can withdraw our troops.

The problem in Iraq is that the Iraqi government won't approve a crackdown to dismantle the Shiite militias? Well then, all we have to do is to convince the Iraqi government to approve a crackdown to dismantle the Shiite militias.
]]

Yeah... their "solutions" are very nice... but you will like Tracinski's real solutions at the end of his column-- they are real and they are the only way we can possibly win.

A Painful (And Inconvenient) Truth

-
I keep saying that the truth is very hard to conceal. Whether it's "Global Warming" or the war, the DLF and their media lapdogs have waged a tireless war against the truth of the matter. They try and try to cover it, bury it, deny it, conceal it, camoflauge it, and whatever else they can do to the truth... but it keeps showing up like an unwanted dinner guest.

The following story is the latest example. You can actually feel how painful it is for the ap to report this story. Like so many other things they hate to report, though, they throw in lots and lots of editorial comments to distract and confuse the truth.

Want me to translate the story for you, so you can see what they're really saying? No, it's okay... I don't mind. I speak fluent "Clueless Liberal" dialect.

Here is the gist of the story:

"Gee, even though Bush is a moron and everyone in America hates him and his stupid war according to our polls, somehow the evil military is still able to trick dumb losers into signing up."

You can read it if you want, but that is really what it says.

Another Treasure Lost

-
I just love the way the British honor their old warriors. Not to mention the style in which they tell their stories.

Here is the story of one of them who has, sadly, left the mortal plain.

[[ Captain Kenneth Cummins, who died yesterday aged 106, served in the two world wars, and always felt that the part played by the Merchant Navy had never been never fully recognised.

Of the many ships in which he served, his favourite was the smooth-running luxury liner Viceroy of India, which was requisitioned as a troopship to land 2,000 men during Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa.

At 0430 on November 11 1942 she was about 40 miles off the coast of North Africa on her way back to Britain when Cummins, who was savouring his coffee just after coming on watch, heard a huge bang. Looking aft he saw there had been an explosion in the engine room. In the dark Viceroy of India had almost run down U-407, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Ernst-Ulrich Brüller, who had been on the surface recharging batteries.
]]

Such men saved the world for us. Please go and read the rest... and say a prayer for his soul.

The Iranian students who disrupted satan's speech must be confused... but he straightened them out. You see, they were chanting that he was a dictator... and he laid out the truth for them:

[[ According to the student news agency ISNA, Ahmadinejad responded to the students' chants of "students can die but they do not accept degradation" by lashing out at the United States.

"Today, the worst type of dictatorship in the world is the American dictatorship which has been clothed in human rights," he said.

This is exactly the kind of story that the media has been avoiding since the war began. I guess they feel comfortable telling it now that they have won the election.

Well, I suppose that would depend on the question... right?

Larry Elder asks the question... and looks at some answers.

[[ "War is not the answer."

So said the bumper sticker on the car I parked behind. Early for my haircut, I decided to sit a bit and ponder the gravity of that message. "War is not the answer" — to what? To non-war? To, say, the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor? To Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939? To the simultaneous multi-Arab nation attack on the newly United-Nations-chartered State of Israel in 1948?

What? Media Bias On Global Warming?

-
No way!

The nice thing about truth is that, even in the liberal-infested world we live in, it can't be hidden for long. It's like trying to close a closet door on a giant marshmallow... it will eventually begin to ooze out through the cracks. (Geez... that was a strange metaphor!)

The problem is, so many well-intentioned people are still believing all the crap...

[[ "There is an overwhelming bias today in the media regarding the issue of global warming. In the past two years, this bias has bloomed into an irrational hysteria. One Large White Flag, Please

-
Well, I've read some of the ISG (that's the "I Surrender Group) report... and also what some smart people are saying about it.

It is, apparently, everything we feared... and more.

First, let's see what the editorial staff of the NY Post think:

[[ After nine laborious months, the Iraq Study Group yesterday recom mended that there be peace in the Middle East.

Well, of course.

But how to achieve it?

One word: Surrender.
]]

Here's the rest of it: The Counsel Of Cowards

Now, how about a word from Ralph Peters?

[[ Former Secretary of State James Baker and his panelists are trying to shore up the failing regional system that their generation designed. Released yesterday, their report doesn't offer "a new way forward." Its recommendations echo past failures. And it shows no sense of how gravely the world has changed.

The report doesn't offer a plan, but a muddle of truisms and truly bad ideas.

Public places such as shops and tea houses in Bulo Burto, about 124 miles northeast of the capital, Mogadishu, should be closed during prayer time and no one should be on the streets, said Sheik Hussein Barre Rage, the chairman of the town's Islamic court.

Those who do not follow this edict "will definitely be beheaded according to Islamic law," Rage told The Associated Press by phone. "As Muslims, we should practice Islam fully, not in part, and that is what our religion enjoins us to do."

Dear muslim

-
This is an amazing column... it is a simple appeal to the rational, human side of muslims. It comes from Amil Imani, an Iranian-born American citizen who is working hard to get through to the "moderate" muslims. America, Mr. Imani says, is a place of life and hope for oppressed muslims. The case he makes is ironclad and can only be argued with 7th Century words and ideas.

[[ Dear Muslim, being born human comes with a precious gift: the gift to think and decide for yourself. Islam has robbed you of this gift from birth. Parents, aided by relatives and brainwashed by slaveholder imams and mullahs, colluded and did the thinking for you when you were still in no position to exercise your right. They branded you as Muslim, simply because you were born in a Muslim family. Cattle are branded, not humans. Cattle are owned by others. Humans are not. Having branded you “Muslim,” those who robbed you of your gift of self-determination dared you to leave their bondage under the threat of death as apostate. ]]

Those Who Fail To Learn History's Lessons...

-
...are complete morons who are going to make all the rest of us repeat them.

It doesn't take a graduate course in world history... all it takes is an hour or so of reading about the 1930's and 1940's. After that, you will get it. You will understand that we are living in 1938 right now. Many people have been saying this for a while now... and most people are simply not listening.

Here's a good column on the subject.

[[ One of the most eerie aspects of that comparison is the way we in which we are dealing with these dictators, especially Ahmadinejad. Granted, there has been a lot of bluster coming out of the White House about “staying the course” in the Middle East until a democratic beachhead can be established in Iraq. However, the sneak previews leaking out of the soon to be released recommendations of the Iraq study commission, headed by former Secretary of State James Baker and former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton, seem hauntingly similar to another notorious bit of historical appeasement by former British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.

In 1938, Chamberlain, along with French Prime Minister Edouard Daladier and Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, signed the Munich Agreement with Adolf Hitler. This gave the fuehrer the permission he sought from his European neighbors to invade the Sudetenland, a part of Czechoslovakia that had been a part of Germany until the early 1800s, thus setting in motion the events that would soon lead to the outright invasion of the rest of the country by the Nazis.

Violence Is The Culture

-
What do kofi annan, Henry Kissenger, and Tony Blair have in common?

They share an ignorant and dangerous attitude about how to fix the "muslim problem" that the West has.

They, like so many other "enlightened" people, seem to think that the answer to all the world's problems is to solve the Israel/Palestinian issue. Once that is settled, they attest, the muslims will be happy and ready to really act like peaceful members of the world community.

The only problem with this theory is... well, there are lots of problems with this theory. Let us just sum it up by saying that it is complete and utter nonsense.

Here's a nice column on the subject. Notice the absolutely solid and undeniable logic.

[[ It is astonishing that so many intelligent people could seriously espouse such an obvious falsehood. Do they really believe that Sunni Muslims and Shi'ite Muslims - whose views on Israel are identical - are slaughtering each other in Iraq because of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? Or that anti-Syrian politicians in Lebanon - who are no less anti-Israel than the pro-Syrian sort - are being assassinated by Syria and threatened with a coup by Hizbullah because of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?

That Arab Muslims are committing genocide against black Muslims in Sudan because of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?

That Taliban Muslims are murdering non-Taliban Muslims in Afghanistan because of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?

That Chechen Muslims took Russian schoolchildren hostage in Beslan because of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?

That Muslims and Hindus are killing each other in Kashmir because of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?

That Muslims worldwide rioted over Danish cartoons because of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? The list could go on for pages.

The Lighter Side

-
Here's a good one sent to me by heciii. Behind the laugh, though, is a sad truth... we definitely do things differently with our kids these days.

Anyway...

[[ TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED

the 1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking .

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because .

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down
the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound, no personal computers , no Internet or chat rooms....WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house an

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!
If YOU are one of them . . CONGRATULATIONS !

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good .

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?! ]]
